Pela segunda vez nas Olimpíadas de Tóquio, um judoca se recusou a enfrentar um adversário. Mohamed Abdalrasool, do Sudão, não apareceu para enfrentar Tohar Butbul. O COI (Comitê Olímpico Internacional) está investigando se a motivação foi política.

"O COI está sempre preocupado com esses casos e os está monitorando de perto", disse o diretor do Comitê Olímpico Internacional, James Macleod. "Claramente, se houver abusos flagrantes à Carta Olímpica, o COI tomará todas as medidas necessárias a esse respeito".

Na semana ada, o argelino Fethi Nourine desistiu de lutar nas Olimpíadas em luta justamente contra Abdalrasool — já que, em caso de vitória, enfrentaria Butbul na rodada seguinte. Depois, Nourine disse à imprensa da Argélia que abriu mão de competir em apoio à Palestina.

"Trabalhamos muito para chegar às Olimpíadas... mas a causa palestina é maior do que tudo isso", disse ele.

Nourine e seu técnico, Amar Benikhlef, tiveram suas credenciais retiradas pelo Comitê Olímpico da Argélia. Eles também foram suspensos pela Federação Internacional de Judô (IJF, na sigla em inglês).

"A IJF tem uma política rígida de não discriminação, promovendo a solidariedade como um princípio fundamental, reforçado pelos valores do judô. A retirada de Nourine foi em total oposição à filosofia da Federação Internacional de Judô", afirmou a entidade, em comunicado."

Com relações políticas historicamente complicadas, as tensões entre Israel e a Palestina aumentaram durante este ano, com o recrudescimento de confrontos na fronteira.
