O BTS foi o artista mais ouvido ao redor do mundo em 2020, segundo ranking da IFPI (Federação Internacional da Indústria Fonográfica, na sigla em inglês). O grupo se sagrou como o primeiro artista coreano a receber essa distinção.

O BTS é oficialmente o artista global do ano da IFPI! Este foi um ano histórico para o grupo, que viu o lançamento de três álbuns, e a quebra de vários recordes de vendas e nas paradas, tanto doméstica quanto globalmente."

Em 2020, o BTS lançou os discos "Map of the Soul: 7" (em fevereiro) e "Be" (em novembro), que atingiram o número um na parada de álbuns mais vendidos da Billboard; além de "The Journey" (em julho), cantado em japonês, que ficou na 14ª posição na mesma parada.

Em novembro, os rapazes também se tornaram os primeiros artistas de k-pop a serem indicados ao Grammy, ganhando uma nomeação de melhor performance pop em duo/grupo pelo single "Dynamite".

Os colegas de lista do BTS são todos do eixo EUA/Canadá. A ausência de artistas britânicos foi notada pela imprensa, visto que One Direction, Adele e Ed Sheeran já venceram o prêmio em anos anteriores.
